Since the summer of 2000, two daily recordings – taken at 2 PM and 8 PM – have documented the growth and changes of the population. The recordings from the last 30 days can be viewed here.

The video shows the first 25 years in time-lapse. It ends on September 12, 2025 – the project’s 25th anniversary. On this day, as on September 12, 2000, numerous members of parliament met in the northern courtyard of the Reichstag building to join the artwork “The Population”: symbolically and also quite literally, with soil from their constituencies. 

The first webcam went into operation on July 11, 2000, and documented the installation process before the opening. The time-lapse video lasts 7 minutes and 44 seconds.
